Our sustainability strategy – We care for tomorrow

Thinking about tomorrow today – this guiding principle is firmly anchored in the DNA of Optima and reflects our daily commitment to act in a long-term and responsible manner. We not only aim to produce in a resource-efficient way, but also to support our customers in achieving their sustainability goals. Our sustainability strategy provides the necessary foundation for greater transparency and progress measurement in the areas of Responsible Corporate Governance, Environment, Customer Solutions, and Employees. This prepares us to act holistically and actively shape the transformation from linear to circular economy.

We act transparently and responsibly, rely on fair partnerships and active social commitment.

SBTi

OPTIMA has joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), setting ambitious climate protection goals. The company will establish reduction targets for 2030 and a net-zero target for 2050, aligning with the 1.5-degree goal of the Paris Agreement. These targets encompass all OPTIMA Group activities and consider both direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3). OPTIMA thus emphasizes its commitment to climate protection and contributes significantly to mitigating global climate change.

Certificate DIN 16247

DIN 16247

Carrying out an energy audit in accordance with DIN EN 16247, i.e. a systematic examination of organizations', plants', buildings' and systems' energy use and consumption, is an important foundation for improving energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption.

Certificate ISO14001

DIN 14001

DIN EN ISO 14001 is a standard for environmental management systems, one that is accepted and applied worldwide. Key requirements involve the planning, implementation, monitoring and improvement of environmental targets. In 2022, Optima introduced an environmental management system in compliance with DIN EN ISO 14001.

Responsible corporate governance

As part of our sustainability strategy “We care for tomorrow,” we act responsibly, rely on fair partnerships, and engage actively in society. As a member of the UN Global Compact, we are committed to responsible corporate governance. For this purpose, we have defined three focus areas:

Hans Bühler at the lectern

Compliance

Legal compliance and transparency form the foundation of our responsible actions. Through regular training and an established whistleblower system, we identify risks at an early stage and continuously develop our compliance structures further.

Environmental and Social Standards in the Supply Chain

We rely on fair partnerships and promote the disclosure of environmental and social practices by our suppliers. Through clear sustainability requirements, we strengthen a responsible supply chain.

Social commitment

Both regionally and internationally, we support various projects in the areas of education, sports, environment, and humanitarian aid – out of responsibility for people and nature.

Environment

We reduce greenhouse gas emissions and resource consumption – in our operations and along the entire supply chain – for an environmentally friendly future. For this purpose, we have defined three focus areas.

Decarbonization of our own operations

In line with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, we pursue a holistic approach and have set decarbonization targets: significant emission reductions by 2030 and Net Zero by 2050. Through consistent measures, we work continuously to effectively reduce our emissions.

Our emission reduction targets at a glance

Our guiding principle “We care for tomorrow” makes it clear that with our actions today we are already thinking about tomorrow. This means that climate protection is a central issue for Optima.

Since 2024, Optima Group’s emission reduction targets for 2030 as well as the Net Zero target for 2050 have been scientifically validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The targets are aligned with the 1.5-degree goal of the Paris Climate Agreement.

This means: Optima is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 at the latest. As an interim target, Scope 1 emissions (direct emissions) and Scope 2 emissions (indirect emissions from purchased energy) are to be reduced by 42 % by 2030, while Scope 3 emissions (other indirect emissions) are to be reduced by 25  %.

Time for resource-conserving systems!

On request, we determine the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of your project, analyze it, and reduce it using sustainable technologies. This has a positive impact on your carbon balance and the operating costs of the system.

For the manufacturing phase, we take into account all CO₂ emissions from the extraction of raw materials to the ready-to-ship machine. The usage phase begins with the shipment of the machine and ends with recycling. In this phase, the decisive factors include the electricity mix used in production, how the process media are produced, and the operating mode of the system.

For maximum transparency, the calculation method of the PCFs of our machines has been verified by TÜV SÜD according to ISO 14067. Together with you, we analyze the carbon footprint of your machines and systems and support you with a wide range of optimization measures.

Decarbonization and energy efficiency

Energy efficiency is one of the main focuses of our new machine developments. By using state-of-the-art sealing technology, we have reduced energy consumption by 38 percent and heating time by 95 percent. In addition, we offer the calculation of the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) upon customer request in order to derive targeted emission reduction measures.

Resource-conserving systems and machines

Our focus is on manufacturing machines and systems that operate with maximum efficiency and conserve resources – throughout the entire product life cycle. In addition, we promote the development of innovative packaging solutions that enable a circular economy.

Sustainable service

Our digital Smart Services enable maximum system availability at optimized maintenance costs – through predictive maintenance. Wear and spare parts are used efficiently. Conversion and overhaul programs allow adaptation to new market requirements without the need for complete new acquisitions. In addition, we offer the professional return of individual machine parts into material cycles upon request – an active contribution to extending material life cycles.

Every detail counts

At Optima, we get to the bottom of things. And we deal with questions such as: What are future-proof, CO₂-optimized materials for our machines? From which partners do we source them, and with which technology were they produced? What does recycling-friendly machine design mean, and where is there the possibility for the use of recyclates? We scrutinize every single aspect of machine and plant engineering, identify potential savings, and realize them. For us, that is Sustainable Technology.

From idea to market

Reusing packaging materials again and again without any loss of quality – this is the so-called cradle-to-cradle principle. The clear goal is to optimally align product protection, environmental footprint, and cost-effectiveness.

On the path to circular packaging, we accompany you from the initial idea to the finished product on the market. We support you in prototype production, in carrying out tests under production-like conditions, and in converting your production. Together with our network partners, we even help you, if desired, in building new supply chains for the best materials.

Packaging and sustainability

Packaging is often at the center of debates, but not always for justified reasons: Packaging is far more than just attractive wrapping – it effectively protects sensitive products from spoilage, preserves them, makes them easier to handle, and ensures traceability. This is especially important when it comes to food. Packaging therefore makes an important contribution to feeding the growing world population. Moreover, avoiding food waste reduces the global carbon footprint by eight percent. By contrast, only a small portion of the carbon footprint of packaged food is usually attributable to the packaging itself. So it is worth taking a closer look.

Avoiding food waste helps reduce carbon-dioxide
Only around 3.5 % of a product's carbon footprint is due to the packaging
